A.W. Pink is one in whom we should not fully support, endorse nor…..emulate!

“2Ti_2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This month marks the 36th year anniversary when my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ came and saved me, and it has been only in the past year that I have come to know of A.W. Pinkand his writings.

I came to know about Pink through the postings of Mike Jeshurun, a Christian brother who writes articles on a number of blogs he has founded, and who has a presence on Face Book.  One blog in particular is very devoted to and endorsing the writings of Pink.  I never read anything by Pink; I understood he believed in the Election and Predestination of the saints, which I have come to understand by the Lord through the years in my Bible studies, so I never felt the need to look further into his writings.

In the past couple of weeks or so that did change when this brother posted a sermon, which was given by A.W. Pink titled “Christian Fools”, (Which I shall go into more detail further on in this posting.) After reading it, and disliking it immensely, I started to do my own research on the life of Mr. Pink and found there are a number of major concerns I found that just does not adhere to Scripture in his teachings,  his life, and those with whom he was influenced by, they are as follows (this is just a few):

1.      After his conversion in 1908, he was already excepting “Pastor” positions in the United States, after a 2-month stint at the Moody Bible Institute in 1910.  It was reported he was impatient, and felt he knew all he needed to know, and the Moody Bible Institute assessed he was ready for a “Pastorship” and located him.  Then he married his wife in 1916.  He served as pastor in several churches. From a Biblical perspective, did the Lord train and send him into the ministry? In addition, did he ever have a job to provide for his wife, besides “the ministry?

2.      The writings of John Owen, a Puritan, were influential in his life, and I found that John Owen was supportive of the trial and execution of King Charles 1, why?   He did not preach against it.  He had the audacity to preach a sermon the day after the King’s execution while successfully excluding to mention the event!  Oliver Cromwell being impressed with the sermon, asked J. Owen to join forces with him on his campaigns in Scotland and Ireland (this was a military campaign).  This was a treacherous act against an appointed ruler of England, by so-called Puritan Christians. (God’s word states: 1Tim 2:1-4, Matt 26:52). John Owen along with Oliver Cromwell were rebels, and were guilty of shedding blood.

3.      A number of his writings, sermons or letters such as: “Christian Fools”, “Tithing”, “The Necessity of God’s Appointed Teachers”, “The Sovereignty of God”, “A.W. Pink on Apostasy” and “The Holy Sabbath”, to name a few, as far as I have read are misleading, confusing, verbose, and others are just plain false teaching adding his own thoughts (reasoning assumptions) as God’s thoughts.(Rev 22:18-19)

There were some major flaws in his character, and some found he lacked in Pastoral care visitation, “Pink did do a good job in comforting the sick & dying. He just could not do small talk. And small talk in South Carolina was (& is) a big thing”.

Finally, Pink became a total recluse for 12 or more years, until his death in 1952. Always possessed of an abrasive personality, Pink eventually retreated into isolation.  The last 13 years of his life were spent in self-enforced solitude in Stornoway, Scotland.” This is quoted from Iain Murray’s book; “The Life of Arthur W. Pink.”    Therefore, his isolation was self-imposed not lead of the Lord.  This was outright disobedience for a servant of God to emulate.  God’s word stipulates we are chosen to minister to people: Matt 25:35-40, Rom 12:1-21, James 2:1-26,etc.  He was a man unto himself, the village in which he resided only saw him on his solitary walks, nothing more, nothing less, he also informed believers who wanted to visit, not to bother because he desired solitude to write.  Is this the mindset of a true servant of the Lord? Is this the Fruit of the Spirit?  It is not according to my bible!

“2Ti 2:24  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
2Ti 2:25  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; “

Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

Now I would like to continue with the observations that Pink wrote in his Sermon “Christian Fools” posted by Mike Jeshurun on his Face Book page.

Here is a link, if you care to read it for yourself. http://www.pbministries.org/books/pink/Miscellaneous/christian_fools.htm

As soon as I read the title, I did not care for his usage of the word “Fools” in this context, it is derogatory, and lacks humility, so I decided to read it.  I was not impressed with it, and it left me with a foul taste.  I am going to take an excerpt from this writing to give an example of how he was miss applying the scriptures to suit his belief system:

“Now notice, dear friends, that Christ did not upbraid these disciples because they did not understand, but because of their lack of faith. The trouble with them was they reasoned too much. Very likely they prided themselves on their logical minds and said, Well, surely we are not asked to believe impossibilities and absurdities: both of these cannot be true; one is true and the other cannot be. Either the Messiah of Israel is going to be a glorious and a triumphant Messiah, or else He is going to be a rejected and a humiliated one: they cannot both be true. That is why Christ said to them—not because of their failure to understand, but because of their lack of faith—“O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.””

Let us look at the words he has spoken, which have been underlined and in bold to see if he is truly representing what was written in the word, for our discernment and learning.  The scripture says the following:

“Luk 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Luk 24:45  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
Luk 24:46  And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: ” Now let us look at John: “Joh 20:8  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
Joh 20:9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.”
This means that they “knew not the scripture” it means they had no spiritual understanding of the scripture, which affected their faith.    But in order for them to have the faith to believe in that which was written, the Lord had to “open their understanding”.  THEN they believed, because it was granted unto them at that time.

I would like to remark that Pink is presuming he knew the reason why they acted in such a manner;   “The trouble with them was they reasoned too much. Very likely they prided themselves on their logical minds and said, Well, surely we are not asked to believe impossibilities and absurdities”.  The Lord’s word speaks nothing of the sort, in this regard.  Presumptive reasoning of this kind is plainly the spirit of pride at work here. It is not only misleading, but is adding to scripture, which is not written.  It is also borderline “slander”. This type of spirit is exactly what leads men into major false teaching.  And I’ve come to hate this type of misrepresentation of the Lord’s word because it is deceitful, and filled with guile, and so many so-called teachers utilize this type of teaching style.

Pink uses this as a basis to rebuke the belief systems of the Armenians and Calvinists, while he yet agrees with some aspects of both systems; he is accusing them of not understanding the whole truth as stated in God’s word, (according to Pink’s version of the truth).  Here is an example:
“When the Calvinist says that faith is the gift of God and that no sinner ever does or can believe until God gives him that faith, I heartily say Amen; but when the Armenian says that the gospel commands all who hear it to believe, and that it is the duty of every sinner to believe, I also say Amen.”  Pink here is saying he agrees with both belief systems, but goes on to rebuke them for their errors in their limited understanding.  Here is his rebuke to the Armenians.
For example, there are men today who read God’s Word, and they see that the gospel is to be preached to every creature, and that God commands all who hear that gospel to believe in Christ; then they come across some texts on election, predestination:—“Many are called but few are chosen,” and they say, Well, I cannot harmonize this, I cannot see how it is possible to preach, unhampered, a gospel to every creature, and yet for election to be true.  And because they cannot harmonize the two things, they neither believe the two nor will they preach both. They cannot harmonize election with a gospel that is to be preached to every creature, and so the Arminians preach the gospel but they leave out election.”

Now his rebuke to the Calvinists. “Yes, but there are many Calvinists who equally come under the rebuke of our text. They believe in the sovereignty of God, but they refuse to believe in the responsibility of man. I read a book by a hyper-Calvinist only a few weeks ago, by a man whose shoe-latchet the present speaker in many things is not fit to stoop down and unloose—a man of God, a faithful servant of His, one from whom I have learned not a little—and yet he had the effrontery to say, that responsibility is the most awful word in the English language, and then went on to tirade against human responsibility. They cannot understand how that it is possible for God to fix the smallest and the greatest events, and yet not to infringe upon man’s accountability—men themselves choosing the evil and rejecting the good—and therefore because they cannot see both they will only believe in one.”   Pink errors here, they did see properly.

Now let us see how Pink utilizes this scripture to rebuke the un-saved, when in actuality this scripture in Luke 24, is not addressed to the unsaved, but believers!   “O sinner, Christ is saying to you tonight, “O fools and slow of heart to believe all.” You do believe much as you sit there. There are some of you who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. There are some of you who believe that He is the only Savior who can save any sinner. You believe that, then why not believe all? Why not believe in Him for yourself? Why not trust His precious blood for yourself; and why not tonight? God is ready to save you now if you believe on Him. The blood has been shed, the sacrifice has been offered, the atonement has been made, the feast has been spread. The call goes out to you tonight, “Come, for all things are now ready.” And I say again, the devil will tell you as you are sitting there, “There is no need for me to come tonight; I will just wait till God gets ready to come and save me.” How do you know that while you are waiting death may not come and smite you down. “Boast not thyself of tomorrow for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” The Holy Spirit saith, “Today if ye will hear His voice harden not your hearts.” Yes, man can “harden” his heart: God says so; and God calls to you: “Harden not your heart.” That is something you do yourself—not the devil—you do it. God is speaking to you through His Word tonight. O may His grace forbid that He shall say our text to any of you after you have left this room—O God forbid that you should be among those “fools” who believe not all. You do believe that Christ is God’s appointed Savior for sinners, why not your Savior? O may the Spirit draw you by the cords of love to that One who has said, “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.””

Pink is misapplying the scriptures here, and he is teaching his belief that sinner’s have a “natural ability” and responsibility to “believe” in the gospel!  “ I am not limiting God, I am describing to you the plan and method that God Himself has set forth in His Word, and if you would be saved, sinner, you have got to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for yourself. I say it reverently: the Holy Spirit won’t believe for you. The Holy Spirit may put it into your heart and give you the desire to believe. If you have the desire it is because He has put it there, but He won’t believe for you: believing is a human act.”
Pink further explains this in his “Sovereignty of God” writings; under the title of; “God’s Sovereignty and Human Responsibility”, here is a quote.  “Now, in like manner, the sinner while altogether lacking in moral and spiritual ability does, nevertheless, possess natural ability, and this it is which renders him accountable unto God. Men have the same natural faculties to love God with as they have to hate Him with, the same hearts to believe with which they disbelieve, and it is their failure to love and believe which constitutes their guilt. An idiot or an infant is not personally responsible to God, because lacking in natural ability. But the normal man who is endowed with rationality, who is gifted with a conscience that is capable of distinguishing between right and wrong, who is able to weigh eternal issues is a responsible being, and it is because he does possess these very faculties that he will yet have to “give account of himself to God” (Rom. 14:12).”
Pink is taking Romans 14:12 out of context, Paul is writing to believers in regards to NOT judging one another with regards what one does eat, and one that does not eat meat!  This is downright mis-use of scriptures to “fit” his theology.  This is not the Holy Spirit teaching him.

The rest of this sermon is very confusing, and non-simplistic in its presentation, it is convoluted and very hard to wrap one’s mind around it, which I have learned not to trust.  This is not the manner in which the Lord teaches through His Holy Spirit. Our dear Lord is not an author of confusion.  It is obvious Pink was influenced by, and is expounding certain teachings that he learned from John Owen.  John Owen believed and taught “Puritan Preparationism”.

This term is explained in a writing from Martyn McGeown:

Martyn McGeown* writes the following in his article entitled “The Notion of Preparatory Grace in the Puritans”: “By this they meant, generally (with some variation), that an unregenerate sinner could prepare himself for the grace of regeneration by a serious consideration of his sins in the light of God’s law. By careful self-examination the sinner could and ought to stir himself up to loathe his own sinfulness and to desire mercy … , and by a judicious use of means (especially attendance upon the preaching of the gospel) he could put himself in the position of being a likely candidate for the New Birth. Most of the Puritans who advocated such views insisted that God prepares the sinner in this way. They were loath to suggest that man can do this unaided by the Spirit. However, they also taught that this preparatory grace was often present in reprobates so that preparation for regeneration did not necessarily lead to salvation in the end.” [1]

As you read the full sermon you will find this is exactly what Pink is teaching.  And I have read other works by him, which I also found very confusing, and represents the typical “Philosophical Theology teaching system”, which is nothing but the “fleshly reasoning mind’ and not of the Holy Spirit, and something which I do not adhere to at all!  It is not simplistic in nature, because the Lord’s word is written for all to be able to understand as they mature according to the grace granted by the Lord according to His perfect purposeful will and timing. Col_2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

The Lord always condescends to the level where a believer is, but will not allow them to stay there.  He will guide them into all truth, as they are able to bear it.  1Co 3:2  I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

Now I want to state that I have read other works of Pink’s in the last few days and have found they were very good in their teaching.  I had no problem agreeing with them.  Actually in his writing of the “The Leading of the Holy Spirit” it is exactly what I have learned from the Lord through the years, and I also agreed in part with his writings on “Sovereignty of God” but his flip-flopping back and forth leads to confusion and makes me question “if” he truly understand all of God’s council.  I am not stating that A. W. Pink was not saved, but his works are of the nature of wood, hay, and stubble, and shall be burnt up, but the believer is saved.

1Co 3:12  Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

1Co 3:13  Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

1Co 3:14  If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

1Co 3:15  If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

So based upon my findings through the Word of God and His Holy Spirit, I cannot and will not support, endorse nor emulate the works of A.W. Pink, and other believers should not. There are those like Mike Jeshurun who lift this man so high on a pedestal, and who follow his pernicious teachings, that it borders on idolatry.  Because with my experience with Mike J, once I started disagreeing with Pink and his teachings from a biblical stance, Mike removed himself from the right hand of fellowship.

I find it very disturbing that so many people lightly cover over Pink’s weaknesses, or “flaws” as some have stated.  When it has been very clearly stated in the Lord’s Word, it is within the “little foxes” and/or a “little leaven” that will destroy the vineyard, and leaven the whole lump.

Son 2:15  Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.

Eze 13:3  Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!

1Co 5:6  Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

1Co 5:7  Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Therefore, we need to view ALL things as the Lord views them; it is for our protection, liberty, and edification. What we may not deem important in our eyes, is the opposite in our Lord’s eyes. Though they err, they are still brethren, and not enemies, but we must still be separate from them.

2Ti 2:24  And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

2Ti 2:25  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2Ti 2:26  And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

If the Lord shall lead, I will write upon the other teachings of A.W. Pink and express why they are unscriptural in nature.

May the Lord open your eyes to see the truth, so that you may be pleasing unto the Lord in ALL things pertaining unto Holiness, Righteousness, and Truth, as He sees it according to His perfect will.

Eph 5:8  For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Eph 5:9  (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

Eph 5:10  Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

Eph 5:11  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Apostate Evangelists & Teachers

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2nd Corinthians 11:13-14
